Hanalei Bay
Hanalei Bay used to be the North Shore’s best-kept-secret surf town but things are changing with more and more visitors every year. Beginners and pros alike flock to Hanalei Bay for it’s numerous surf spots in the winter months.
The crescent-shaped bay is adorned with beachfront homes, most of these homes are vacation rentals, some are private homes. Hanalei is a diverse community with it’s distinctive taro farms and the last remaining rice mill in Hawaii. There is vibrant mix of homes in Hanalei, from metal-roofed plantation cottages to Bali inspired multimillion-dollar beachfront homes. There are no condominiums in Hanalei and vacation rentals must have a grand-fathered-in, active Transient Vacation Rental license.
Hanalei town is a short walk from the beach and has a handful of shops and restaurants. Bar Acuda, Ama, Hanalei Bread Co, and Akamai Juice are some local favorites. The Hanalei Liquor Store and it’s adjoining food trucks are just down the street, stop in at Kauai Fresh Bite for the best salads on island.
Kayak, surf and SUP rentals are available in town at Napali Kayak, Kayak Hanalei and Hanalei Surf Co. Just west of Hanalei Bay is Lumahai beach, a short hike down to the beach reveals a gorgeous lagoon surrounded by ancient lava flows. Always be aware when visiting beaches without lifeguards, Lumahai is beautiful in the summertime but winter can be treacherous.
Hanalei Bay is a destination for surfers in the winter and everyone else in the calm summer months. If you are curious about Hanalei real estate, contact me today for more information.
